OpenWRT Uses EasyVMX!
Published Wed, 2007-04-18 15:58 Tags: firmware | linksys | News | openwrt | prebuilt vmThe firmware for the wireless routers WRT54G/GS is based on Linux, and the GPL demands that you have to share your source code.
After this code was released a lot of third pary firmwares popped up.
One of the major third party firmwares is OpenWRT. Not only modifying the original firmware, but actually rewriting most of it from scratch. While this certainly makes OpenWRT stand out from the crowd, one of the really unique things it can offer is a writable file system.
OpenWRT supports an amazing range of hardware. The "bleeding edge" version of OpenWRT (the Kamikaze) is broadening the hardware support even further.

Since OpenWRT is Linux it should run on a standard PC, right? Absolutely right. But then, who would sacrifice a computer to run wireless router software?
Enter EasyVMX!. The OpenWRT team used EasyVMX! to create an OpenWRT/Kamikaze virtual appliance, and they show you how to roll your own too.
(Now, I really hope they don't mind that I'm using DD-WRT on my WRT-54G...)
EasyVMX! Tutorial in Dutch
Published Mon, 2007-04-16 20:37 Tags: dutch | easyvmx | tutorial | vmware playerI'll admit it right now: I don't understand a single word of this. Dutch is like Greek to me.

But, if you can read and understand Dutch, and you want a tutorial on how to use VMware Player and EasyVMX! in this language, go to Planet.nl and read this article.
Today, EasyVMX! moved to a new location.
The complete web page, the blog and the forums are up and running... in a virtual machine!

Hopefully, nobody noticed any hiccups during the transition.
VMware Player, EasyVMX! Video Tutorial
Published Wed, 2007-04-11 19:00 Tags: easyvmx | tutorial | vmware playerSo, you've heard about virtualization. And you found VMware Player and EasyVMX!. What next?
You could always try the tutorial on this page, or you can go for some real style!

Blindhog.net has a wonderful video tutorial showing you how to obtain and install VMware Player, and how to use EasyVMX! for creating virtual machines.
There's even a follow-up showing you how to install Ubuntu in a virtual environment.
Virtualization (I know I'm mixing the definitions a tiny little bit here) is popping up everywhere, and it comes as no surprise that someone wrote an x86 emulator in Java.
Well, that did come as a bit of a surprise, actually...
Here's a picture of a mobile phone running the emulator:

And I have pleasant news for you.
Java is somewhat universal, and it runs in your browser. There's really nothing stopping you from trying it yourself. Just click on Demo 1 or Demo 2!
The demos contain a lot of old MS-DOS games for that trip down memory lane.
If you don't understand what to do with the demos, you can read the instructions here.
The software is not yet released for the public, but they are working on a suitable general licence for external users.
Become a VMX Wizard with sanbarrow.com
Published Mon, 2007-03-19 19:11 Tags: config files | sanbarrow.com | vmxI know, visiting EasyVMX! or downloading VMX Builder is a quick and simple way to create VMware config files.
But as soon as you get that virtual machine up and running, you may want to change some of the settings. Just the thought of editing that vmx-file by hand can be quite intimidating. (Notice that VMX Builder will let you edit existing config files too!)

Nobody has done more for spreading knowledge about VMware config files than Ulli Hankeln at sanbarrow.com. He's also written VMX Builder together with Robert Petruska.
To get a grasp of the inner workings of VMware and how this is expressed in the config file, sanbarrow's page VMX Parameters is a required read.
You will get a thorough (and stil clear and simple) explanation of the vmx file. All the do's and don'ts are in there. This my friends, is where the wizardry starts!
Six Steps to AdSense Greatness
Published Mon, 2007-03-19 18:38 Tags: ads | AdSense | channels | google | revenue | SEO read moreGet Rich Fast?
You will find a lot of eBooks for sale on the Internet with promises like "What Google Never Told You about AdSense!". I'd like to call bullshit on that, since Google actually has a lot of quality information. If you look in the right places. Besides, the Internet is full of specialized snippets on the subject.
The truth is that you can get rich, but it involves a lot of hard work, a good chunk of luck, and a lot of visitors. I am a bit reluctant to promise you riches beyond belief, but a monthly payout of a couple of hundred dollars and up should be easily within reach with a modest amount of visitors.

As I said, buying one of those eBooks is not worth it. But it can be hard to find the really juicy bits about AdSense on the Internet, and that's why I'm putting together this page.
And the surprising part is: The juicy bits are amazingly few!
What you want is to make more people click on more ads, and here's how to do it!
AdSense Juicy Bits
There is absolutely no reason to save the essential information for later, so here we go:
- Get listed by the major search engines.
- Select the right placement for your ads.
- Select the right type of ads.
- Make your ads blend with your content.
- Track your performance with channels.
- Profit!
There's really nothing more to it. I promise.

What you just read is the basis for the "Get Rich Fast" eBooks on the Internet. There are no pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, and the only people who will benefit from it are the sellers of these books.
That is, unless you want to pursue a scheme of domain pirating for advertising only. This won't only make you a lowlife filling the Internet with garbage and troubling people. It may also disqualify you from being an AdSense publisher.
Needless to say, you won't get an education in online scams here.

Every now and again, it just so happens that I get what I would like to think is a good idea.
Sometimes, it turns out that the idea just pretended to be good, other times I don't have the resources to see it through.
But this is not one of those times.
I got a good idea and I acted on it.

I was thinking. What if you were making a virtual machine, and you want to burn it to a CD or a DVD.
You need a machine that will fit nicely on that CD or DVD of course!
This is why the default disk size in EasyVMX! and in the Super Simple Edition has changed to 4.7GB. And that's why you also will find a choice for a 700MB CD sized disk image.
Actually, the images are a little bit smaller, just so you can fit the other files of your virtual machine on that disc too.
The virtual machine will not really be usable running from a CD or a DVD, but this can come in handy when you want to take a backup of the machine or copy it to another location.
Here's the new beta release of VMware Fusion, VMware on Mac.

And it turns out that the 3D rumours were true!
We are talking DirectX 8.1 here, only on Windows XP SP2 and only for a selection of games.
Yep, that's right: No Vista in full 3D yet.
Funny I should mention Vista, because Fusion really has better support for it.
Also networking has gotten better (read: bridged networking).
You're getting snapshot support and it will run on OS X 10.5 (Leopard).
There are still a lot of unsolved issues, and I'm not sure if they've turned off debugging in this beta release.
After a beta testing period, Parallels has released the finished official update of Parallels Desktop for Mac!

The biggest news are of course Coherence and the USB 2.0 support.
I especially like the Installation Assistant, which makes Windows (XP or Vista) as easy as entering your name, company and Windows activation key, and the assistant will take care of the rest.
Also, Transporter is a physical to virtual converter. Used either locally or over the network. It can convert your VMware virtual machines too!
Take a look at all the updates here.
If you are interested in using Parallels Desktop, but you're not really keen on going through all that installation hassle, I found these pre-built virtual machines in the Parallels Forum.
